Lilly Pulitzer
New York socialite Lilly Pulitzer quit the city in the 1950's to open a juice shop in Palm Beach, Florida, only to realize that it wasn't the frosty beverages that would make her famous, it was the dresses she wore while selling them. Pulitzer's colorful, summery dresses, shells, and capri pants quickly made her a favorite in Florida (and later, Cape Cod and the Hamptons). Fashioned in kitschy patterns imprinted with ducks and sea turtles, and in pastel plaids, and making good use of ever-preppy pinks and greens, her designs have changed little in the past half-century. After experiencing a major resurgence of interest in the mid-1990's, Lilly Pulitzer's clothing has once again become the unofficial uniform for the resort set.
